What's Going On in Science?
In 5th Grade Science, we are covering:
It is imperative that your child STUDY THEIR NOTES NIGHTLY - it will greatly help them succeed this year in 5th Grade Science!!!
This will be the first year that your child will be taking the SCIENCE EOG and it will be challenging, but I guarantee that they will be prepared if they put in the effort and study! Your child will be taking the SCIENCE EOG on the COMPUTER at the end of this year!! We will be giving all Science Assessments and Checkpoints on the Chromebooks to help your child prepare for this big change this year.
All of the Science Anchor Charts that I am making throughout the year are available below to help you brush up on your Science concepts and also to help your child study and complete their homework if they need assistance.
Parents please encourage your students to go back and review ALL of their notes from Science throughout the year - it is better to do that now than wait until right before the EOGs!!
- Scientific Method
- Heat Transfer: conduction, convection, & radiation are the 3 types of heat transfer, the difference between conductors & insulators.
- Matter: 3 states of matter (solid, liquid, & gas), how different materials react to heating and cooling, the difference between physical changes and chemical changes, sum of parts equaling the whole, qualitative vs. quantitative data, stages of the water cycle (and how the Sun DRIVES every stage).
- Weather: weather vs. climate, weather tools (hygrometer, anemometer, weather vane, rain gauge, barometer, thermometer), clouds (cirrus, cumulus, stratus, cumulonimbus, nimbostratus), weather conditions (air pressure, temperature, wind speed, wind direction, humidity, precipitation), high air pressure (happy highs), low air pressure (lowsy lows), seasons, air masses, weather fronts (cold fronts, warm fronts, stationary fronts, & occluded fronts), the different effects of El Nino & La Nina on global and North Carolina weather patterns, the differences between tornadoes & hurricanes, local winds (sea breeze & land breeze), global winds that impact North Carolina (prevailing westerlies & jet stream), interpreting weather data (on weather calendars, maps, tables, and graphs) and making predictions about future weather based on the data.
- Ecosystems: abiotic vs. biotic factors, relationship between a population, community, and ecosystem; terrestrial vs. aquatic ecosystems, the specific aquatic ecosystems (freshwater, saltwater, estuary, salt marsh), the specific terrestrial ecosystems (tundra, desert, taiga, deciduous forest, grassland, tropical rainforest), the components of a food chain (producer, consumer, decomposer, herbivore, omnivore, carnivore, scavenger, etc.), the difference between a food chain and a food web, how energy pyramids work, how all of the organisms in a food chain/web are interconnected and 1 change can affect everything else.
- Force & Motion: Newton's 3 laws of motion, forces & motion, gravity, friction, air resistance, distance-time graphs, speed-time graphs, calculating the speed, distance, and time of a moving object using the speed triangle.
- Organisms & Body Systems: single-celled & multi-celled organisms; nervous, muscular, skeletal, respiratory, circulatory/cardiovascular, and digestive systems; and how all of the systems work together in the human body.
- Genetics: inherited traits, acquired traits, and learned behaviors.
